Brown Co. and Pleasant
Hill/Western met up last night in their season
opening contest and Brown Co. took control of this
one early. Coming into tonight's game, this
game was thought to be a very critical early season
matchup for both teams but there were also a lot of
questions surrounding both teams. BC's defense
forced a 3 and out on the first drive of the game
and then on BC's first offensive play of the game
Jacob Wilson broke open a 41yd run for a touchdown.
Henricks had a nice night kicking the ball as he
went 6-6 on extra points and he also was successful
on his 44yd Field Goal attempt. For Pleasant
Hill their standout player was Brett Cox as he was
great at getting open and was able to bring down 9
receptions for 70yds. QB Matt Gunterman had a great
night in the air as he went 12-20 in the air with
only one INT. The overall performer of the
night though was BC's Rick Logsdon who ran for
143yds on 10 carries and also scored 3 rushing
touchdowns. Brown Co. will host Carrollton in
their home opener next week and PH/W will travel to
Unity.

Tonight Beardstown
11/12 Softball had their great run come to an end as
they suffered a 6-2 loss at the hands of LaGrange.
This game was the second time these teams had played
in the tournament and this time LaGrange came out
firing on all cylinders as their hitting and
fielding was just outstanding as they would get the
play they needed every time. Beardstown came
out swinging but every time they would make contact
it would go directly to one of the LaGrange
fielders. When Beardstown was on defense the
exact opposite was happening for them as LaGrange
was able to get the ball into any hole they could to
get runners aboard. This Beardstown team
should be very proud of their accomplishments during
the past month as they came out of what may have
been the toughest district in the state and got all
the way to the state semi-finals without suffering a
loss.

After
a 5 hour delay, Beardstown was finally able to open
up state tournament play against LaGrange.
Both of these teams started out with very strong
pitching and defense as we stayed scoreless heading
into the bottom of the 3rd. Then with one out
in the inning, Hayley Behymer gets the first hit of
the ballgame which allowed Savanah Hay to come in as
the Special Pinch Runner and she brought an
agressive base running strategy that got her to
cross the plate on a base hit by Emma White, Erika
Hull also scored a run in the inning as she reached
safely on a dropped third strike and then scored on
a dropped third strike. Beardstown went on to
give a total team effort to defeat LaGrage by a
score of 3-1. Next up for Beardstown will be
Antioch who are the defending state champions and
return a majority of that team. This game
should be a good one and will start at 2 pm on
Sunday.

Tonight the Beardstown
11/12 Softball team was in East Moline to take on
East Moline in the Sectional Championship game.
East Moline got into the championship game by a 9-4
win over Richland Co.,] and from what everyone up
there was saying sounded like we just might have
been in for a very offensive game as East Moline had
a lot of base hits in the game. But once again
Samantha Blair came out with her A game and only
gave up one hit and one run. Mikaila Kirchner
had an outstanding night at the plate for Beardstown
as she went 3-4 with 3 base hits, 3 runs scored, and
a couple of RBI’s. With the outstanding team
effort, Beardstown won the game 16-1 to advance on
to the state tournament as the Section 2 Champion.
Beardstown will now play against Section 1 on
Saturday, 7/24, in East Moline at 2 p.m.
Beardstown will also be a part of the opening
ceremonies at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Beardstown Softball
continued their dominance yesterday in the 11/12
Sectional as they defeated East Moline by a score of
15-0. Prior to the game I was not for sure how
this matchup would fare because East Moline had
played a very weak Taylorville team in the opening
round and they saved their #1 pitcher for Beardstown
yesterday who ended up giving up 14 runs.
Mackenzie Icenogle had a nice day at the plate as
she went 2-3 with 2 RBI’s. Beardstown used
the running game on the bases with Emma White as she
had 4 stolen bases on the game. The story of
the day was the no hitter thrown by Samantha Blair
as she face 13 batters, one over the minimum, and
struck out 8 of the 13 she faced. Beardstown
now advances to the championship game on Tuesday
night at 6:30 in East Moline against the winner of
the Monday night game between East Moline and
Richland County.

Beardstown opened up
sectional action today
with a game against Richland Co. Beardstown
jumped out to an early lead in this game as they led
9-0 after 2 innings. Samantha Blair was pulled
from the mound after the second inning so that she
would be avaliable for tomorrow's
game as today
she faced 6 batters and struck out 5. Loriana
Trujilo, Mikaila Kirchner, and Summer Lindsey all
went 2-2 in the ballgame as all three had great days
at the plate. Beardstown will now play East
Moline on Sunday
at 4pm as East Moline defeated Taylorville 35-3
earlier in the day.

Our
first game of the evening was between Brown Co. and
Calhoun. This game got off to a good start for
both sides as the score was tied at 3 after 2
innings of play. After the 2nd
inning, Calhoun would only go on to score 3 more
runs and Brown Co. would score 10 more to give them
the win by a score of 13-6. For Calhoun Connor
Gilman had a good night at the plate as he went 2-3
with two base hits and two runs scored. For
Brown Co. Ronnie Coultas had a great game as he made
some key defensive plays at catcher by tagging out
two different runners at the plate on a couple of
very nice plays.
The
second game of the evening was between Macomb and
Beardstown. Both team’s pitchers got off to
great starts as after 2 innings our score was tied
at 1. In the Bottom of the third Beardstown
was able to get 5 runners across the plate and that
would be enough for the 6-1 win. For Macomb,
Brandon Bickers had a good night at the plate going
1-2 with a leadoff ground rule double into the right
field corner in the second inning. For
Beardstown, Trey Perry went 2-3 at the plate with
two doubles, two runs scored, and two RBI’s.
Beardstown will now take on Brown County on Friday
night at 6 pm.

Last
night the second round of the 9/10 Baseball District
Finals got underway with a matchup between
Jerseyville and Brown Co. This game was a
tight score the whole way through as the biggest
lead was after Jerseyville scored 2 in the top of
the 1st inning and from there no one ever
led by more than one run. For Brown Co. Darian Drake
went 2 for 3 with 2 doubles an RBI and 2 runs
scored. For Jerseyville their top performer
this evening was John Bray as he went 2 for 3 with a
double and the 2 run Homerun that put Jerseyville
back on top to win the ballgame by a score of 5-4.
Our second game of the evening saw Macomb and
W. Hancock take to the field in highly offensive
game. This game was neck and neck all the way
through until the bottom of the 5th
inning when W. Hancock was able to plate 6 runs to
give them the comfortable lead to win the ballgame
by a score of 17-10. For Macomb, Mason Westen went 2
for 3 with two singles and two runs scored in the
game. For W. Hancock, Kulton Johnson had a
good night as he went 2 for 3 with two singles and
one double, two runs scored, and 5 RBI’s in the
ballgame.

The
Junior Baseball championship game was a one sided
affair as Brown Co. jumped out to an early lead in
the first inning and never looked back. Brady
Long came out with an amazing pitching performance
for Brown Co. as he picked up the complete game win
by striking out 6 batters, and only allowing 3 hits.
Nathan Mekdara’s grand slam in the 3rd
inning broke the game open as Mekdara finished the
game 2-3 with 5 RBI’s. Brown Co. won the
game over Pike Co. by a score of 18-3 and will now
play in the Sectional on Saturday night in Salem.

Our
first game saw Pike Co. American take on Rushville
who was playing their first game of the tournament.
Pike Co. American took an early lead in the first
inning only to see Rushville bring the score to 11-6
in the bottom half of the inning. Then when
Pike Co. American came back up in the second they
never looked back as they took advantage of multiple
walks and wild pitches to run the bases and built up
a comfortable lead. The player of the game was
from Pike Co. as Chandler Hayden had a nice day
going 1-1 with a base hit , 5 Stolen Bases, and
scored 3 runs in the 24-8 win for Pike Co. American.
Our next game pitted Pike Co. National against
Brown Co. Both of these teams had big wins on
Saturday and both were coming out looking for
another win. Pike Co. National was the first
to step up to the plate as they were able to plate
11 runs in the inning and held Brown Co. to just 1
run. Blair Borrowman had a great day on the
mound for Pike Co. National as she went the distance
and picked up the win. Mariah Markert had one
of the best hits we may see in this tournament as
she hit a hard line drive that went 195 ft to the
fence in left field for Brown Co. In the end
Pike Co. National came out on top by a score of 22-6
and will now play Pike Co. American at 8 pm on
Tuesday night.

Our first game of the
afternoon pitted Tri-County vs. Pike Co. American.
Tri-Co. came out and had an early 10 run lead in the
ballgame until the fifth inning when Pike Co. scored
11 runs on no hits. Kristen Sibley pitched the
majortiy of the game for Pike Co. and she did a very
good job as she struck out 4 batters and only
allowed a couple of walks. Tri-Co.'s Jessica
Medlock had a good day on the bases as she scored 5
runs and had a couple of stolen bases. Pike
Co. went on to win this game by a score of 28-20 and
advances to play Rushville on Sunday.
The second game of the day was saw Pike Co. National
taking on Beardstown in what was probably the most
anticipated game of the day. This game stayed
close through the second inning as we started the
third with a 4-2 score. Then in the bottom of
the third Pike Co.'s bats came alive with 5 runs on
3 hits to break the game open for an eventual 15-5
win for Pike Co. National over Beardstown. For
Pike Co. Jordan Brite had a great game as she struck
out 9 batters and also had a base hit and 3 RBI's.
For Beardstown Autumn Hobrock scored two runs and
had a good game defensively.
The third and final game of the afternoon was
Calhoun vs. Brown County. Right from the start
of this game Brown Co. took control as they scored 6
runs in the first inning. Calhoun scored one
run in the ballgame and that came in the second
inning when Cheyenne Kress was walked and then stole
second and third and then when the throw was made to
third Brown Co. committed their only error of the
ballgame on the overthrow. The player of the
game in our final game was Brown County's Alissa
Hodge as she went 1-2 with two runs scored, struck
out 10 batters, and threw a no hitter as the only
batter's to reach base for Calhoun were those that
were walked. Brown Co. went on to win the game
by a score of 11-1 and will play Pike Co. National
on Sunday.

In the first game of
the evening Rushville was able to make a late inning
comeback and score 7 runs in the last 2 innings to
win by a score of 10--9. Austin Jones was a
big part of the win for Rushville as he only went
2-5 but had two key home runs with a 2 run shot in
the 6 and a 3 run shot over the left field fence.
For Jerseyville the player that stood out to me was
Kyle Obertino as he went 2-4 with 2 home runs in the
ballgame and ended up with 3 home runs for the
tournament. With the loss Jerseyville was
eliminated from the tournament and Rushville moves
on to the game on Saturday.
Our second game featured Brown Co. vs. Pike Co. with
the winner advancing on to the championship game.
This game started out with both teams taking the
lead after their half of an inning for the first two
innings and then finally Pike Co. was able to get
the lead and hold on to it for a 10-8 win.
Garret Smith was the stand out player of the evening
for Pike Co. as he went 1-3, scored 2 runs, and had
3 RBI's with his 3 run home run in the second
inning. For Brown Co. Nathan Banta stood out
for me as he goes 2-4 with 2 base hits and 3 RBI's
in the game. Banata also made some very key
plays over at first base to keep his team in the
ballgame. With the win, Pike Co. moves on to
Sunday's championship game and Brown Co. will now
play Rushville on Saturday.

A couple of weeks ago
we had the longest tennis match in history, and last
night in Rushville we finished what is sure to
be of the longest games in District 17 history as
Brown County was able to outlast a very strong
Jerseyville club 12-9. When the game began on
Wednesday night Brown County jumped out to a 4-0
lead and it looked like Jerseyville was out of the
game by the 3rd inning. Oh how things
changed after a nearly 24 hour rain
delay. Jerseyville came out swinging hot bats
and, the highlight was a Kyle Obertino grand slam,
over the left field fence, to give Jerseyville their
first lead of the game. For Brown County,
Morgan Wettstein was the stand out player, for me,
as he made some great defensive plays at short stop
and he also hit a 2 run homerun in the 6th that tied
the game and gave the Hornets the momentum to finish
out with a victory in the contest.
Our second game of
the evening gave us our first look at two very good
ball clubs as Rushville and Pike Co. did
battle. This game was less about the offense
and more about the pitching and defense. There
were only 6 hits, total, in the game for both
teams. For Pike Co., the player who stood out,
to me, was Mitch Main as he started on the hill, was
removed for rest after a nice outing, and moved to
the catcher position. He did a solid job
behind the plate. For Rushville, Austin Jones
scored on nearly every appearance at the
plate. Jones reached 3rd on all of his plate
appearances but, the closest he came to actually
scoring was when he got caught stealing in the 3rd
inning. In the end, it was a Pike County win
2-0 as they advance to play Brown County at 8:00 pm
on Friday night. Rushville will play
Jerseyville in an elimination game at 6:00
Friday.

Tonight's
11/12 Softball Championship Game was the best game
that any fan could ask for as Beardstown prevailed
over Brown Co. 6-5 in 8 innings. Both
Beardstown and Brown County brought their A game and
this was a battle until the very end.
Pitchers, Blair from Beardstown and Rohrer from
Brown Co., recorded seven strikeouts each in the
ball game. Madison Ryssman stood out to me for
Brown Co. tonight.
Even though she went 1-4 she did reach base safely 3
different times, scored 2 runs, had 1 RBI, and had 2
Stolen Bases. Ryssman also made some very nice
and key defensive plays on at Shortstop this
evening. For Beardstown Emma White went 1-4
while she did reach base 2 times scored 2 runs, 1
RBI, and 1 stolen base. Brown Co.'s season
came to an end this evening with the loss and
Beardstown will advance to the Sectional in East
Moline beginning on 7/16.

Griggsville-Perry came
in to today's game heavily favored to knock off the
Rushville Lady Rockets. in softball, and came away
with a 16-4 win. It wasn't quite as easy as
the scored showed as the Rockets hit the ball pretty
well. They finished with 6 hits and 4 runs
while leaving 5 runners on base but, they made 3
errors in the game and fell to 0-4 on the
year. Cameron and Worthington shared the
pitching duties and Cameron took the loss, but the
comeback in the 5th inning when they were down 11-1
was good stuff. Simpson hit a 3 run home run
and got the game back to 11-4 before giving up 5
more runs in the Tornado 6th. Rhoades was
impressive with 3 hits in the game also and you get
the feeling this team will win some games before the
season ends. Griggsville-Perry pounded out 14
hits and 16 runs as they moved to 4-1 on the
year. Lindsey Hobson suffered an injury in her
last game and is possibly out for the year and that
will hurt a good team with a short bench. She
is an outstanding pitcher and will be missed.
Emrick was strong tonight and improved to 2-0 on the
year. She also had a 3-4 night from the plate
and fielded her position well. Rhea Hobson,
Bradshaw, DeSpain and Whitaker had 2 hits each as 8
of the 9 starters had at least one hit. Moore,
who went 0-3 scored 2 runs also , so everyone
contributed in this team win. The only down
side to this solid win was the four errors in the
game. Emrick threw 5 innings and Freeman 1
inning in the game and I still haven't changed my
mind, in spite of the injuries, in regard to this
being one of the better teams in the area. You
don't want to miss the match up a little later in
the season when they get together with the
Virginia/AC Redbirds who is my other favorite
team. It will be a real
battle.

Rushville baseball
improved to 3-0 on the year this evening as they
knocked off the West Central Cougars 8-2. They
had beaten Lewistown and Abingdon earlier. The
Cougars were 2-2 coming in and hitting the ball
well. They jumped out to a 2-1 lead with 3
hits in the first inning, then they never threatened
again in the game. They finished with 5 hits,
2 runs, 4 errors and they left 3 runners on
base. Boehs had 2 of the 5 hits and they used
3 pitchers in the game. Crockett took the loss
while Gutherie and Corey Barnett also pitched in the
game. Barnett did a nice job with 3 innings of
work as he only gave up 2 hits, 1 run as he
walked 1 and struck out 4. Rushville scored 1
run in the first, 6 in the 3rd and 1 in the 7th to
post the win. Spears and Harris each had 2
hits in the game and 8 of the 9 players had at least
1 hit. Canter, who led off, had 0 hits but he
was on base 3 times and scored 2 runs, so it was a
nice team win for the Rockets. Spears hit a 2 run
home run in the game and Brandon Jones did a nice
job with 2 RBI's and some very nice defensive plays
at first base. The Rockets did not commit any
errors in the game and only used 2 pitchers. Dyche
went 3 innings and gave up 2 runs, then Harris came
in and finished the games as he only faced 12
batters through 4 innings and gave up 1 hit and 0
runs. Rushville will play some tough non-conference
games at a tournament this week end in
Jacksonville.

Argenta-Oreana had the
height advantage with a couple of 6 foot players and
they had a lead for most of the game, but in the end
it was a solid comeback win for South Fulton as they
took the game 35-33. The Rebels only led 33-31
and then the 35-33 win at the end. Stoerger
scored 11 to lead the Bombers and Allen hit 10
points as 7 players hit the scoring column.
They only shot 9 for 37 from the field (24%), 11 for
18 in free throws and then turned the ball over 22
times in the loss. The Bombers ended their
season with 21 wins and 10 losses. Beebe led
the Rebels with 12 points while Churchill hit 9 and
Bollinger 6 in the win. It was a nice night for
Bollinger and not so much to do with the 6 points
but with the defense, the rebounds and the over all
hustle in the come back. After shooting only
19% in the first half and trailing 24-11 at the
intermission, South Fulton finally turned it around
and earned their way into the championship game on
Thursday. They hit 24% over all and 4 of 9
from the charity stripe, but one of the things that
helped them win was their 5 second half
turnovers. The Rebels improved to 23-8 and
will face Havana for the second time this year.
It wasn't the type
of game the Havana Ducks wanted to play, but they
won 49-39 to get to the title game. While
Virginia/AC did not win the game, they played one of
their better games of the season, except for the 22
turnovers. They did hit 15-32 (47%) in the
game and 43% from the line. Bergerud scored 17
points as she led the Redbirds and Vaughn added
10. Virginia/AC ended their season with 14
wins and 15 losses but they didn't give up as they
fought to the end. Friedrich scored 16 and
McClure 11 in the Duck win. Eakle added 8 and
Ellsworth 7, in spite of early foul trouble.
Havana only turned the ball over 13 times while
shooting 50% from the free throw line and 20-43 from
the field. They will take a 29-4 record into their
title game with South Fulton on Thursday. In
their earlier meeting, they were tied with 5 minutes
to play, then the Ducks had a 14-2 run to win the
game. This will be a real battle for the
championship.

Waverly-Franklin-New
Berlin led 14-7, 20-11, 31-22 and 50-29 at the
quarter breaks as they improved to 18-5 on the year
at the expense of the Triopia Trojans in girl's
basketball. The Scotties spread the ball
around well as Loos scored 10, Lockenour 8, Fore 8
and Nickell 7 with 4 other players adding to the
point total. It was a 13-22 (59%) effort from
the line as well. Triopia was led by Huey with
13 points and Reither tossed in 8. They were
50% from the line but couldn't keep up with the
offensive flow of the Scotties as they fell to 5-16
on the year. This is a team that has some
inconsistencies but generally have gotten a little
better and stronger as they season progressed.
They are young and we should see a decent team next
season as they get physically stronger and have
another year of experience.

The Triopia Trojans
fell to the Brown County Hornets, in boy's
basketball, last night as the Trojans fell to
8-6. The game was tied at 7 each, when the
Hornets went on a 13-0 run. Brown Co. led
29-22 at half time and never trailed in the game
again. The Trojans did get it back to a 38-35
game, late in the third quarter but, that was as
close as they came. Cutting down on their
turnovers and hitting their free throws, Brown
County went on a 16-2 run to put the game
away. They left Concord with a 6-6
record. DeWitt led the Hornets with 24 points
and 10-12 from the free throw line. Henricks
scored 11 and Wilson 11 as the Hornets shot 46% from
the field and 74% (17-23) from the line as a team.
They had 14 turnovers in the first half and only 3
in the second half of the game. Tim Wise led
the Trojans with 12 points while Browning and Fricke
each scored 10. Triopia-Meredosia shot 39%
from the field and had 20 turnovers with 25% (1-4)
in free shots.

|
12/29/09
|
Triopia and Rushville
were both in need of a win as they only had one each
on the season and this would be their final game of
the 2009 Lady Tiger Classic. The Trojans
prevailed and won the 39-30 contest as Huey scored
19 ponts while hitting 13 of 17 free throws. The
Rockets had 7 players score in the game as Farris
led with 7 points. Rushville-Industry hit 10
of 18 free throws in the loss.
Griggsville Perry
defeated Beardstown 46-26 as they earned the right
to play Farmington in the consolation losers bracket
title game on championship day. The Tiger's
Denise Rawlins scored 12 points in the loss and
Beardstown hit 8 of 12 free throws but, it wasn't
quite enough. DeSpain hit 13, Crawford 12 and
Witaker 10 and the Tornadoes shot 64% (21-33) from
the charity stripe to held secure the win. G-P
is a little up and down this year and are very good
when they are on top of their game.
Illini Bluffs is an
interesting team and while they didn't win quite as
many games as they wanted in the tournament, they
show a lot of promise. They were defeated by a
good Canton team 49-43, who scored 16 points in the
3rd quarter to take a lead they never
relinquished. Tingleff and McClintock each
scored 10 for the Tigers while Flynn and K. Wall
added 7. Illini Bluffs show 65 % from the free
throw line also and basically had pretty good
tournament. Moser scored 17 for the Lady
Giants, to lead the way, while Harkless scored9,
Martin 8, Conway 5, Joachim 5 and Wilson 5 as Canton
spread the ball around nicely. With the win,
Canton would get a chance to face Havana in a game
for 5th place on Championship day.

|
12/28/09
|
In a mild surprise,
Illini West knocked off the defending champion Lady
Ducks of Havana 64-48. The surprise was the
score more than the win for the Chargers. The
Chargers won every quarter and Havana did not make
the expected late charge to have a chance of
victory. Brown (11) Eakle (8) and Friderich(8) led
the Duck scoring. Havana shot 32% from the
field, 50 % from the free throw line and turned the
ball over 21 times. Illini West shot 49% fro
the field, 72% from the free throw line and turned
it over 24 times in the win. They were led by
23 points from Wear and Mohr added 11 as 7 of the 9
players on the roster scored. The Chargers
pretty much, as they did against Routt, dictated the
tempo of the game.
Piasa Southwestern
had some difficulty in dispatching Illini Bluffs
but, they got the job done as they posted the 42-38
win. Flynn led the Tigers with 12 points,
while McClintock added 8 and Kenzie Wall 7.
Illini Bluffs shot 41% from the field and hit 9 of
16 free throws (56%) and turned the ball over 18
times. The Birds hit 16 of 48 shots from the
field, 4 of 9 in free throws and had 15 turnovers as
they played their usual, sound and fundamental game.
Darr was sharp with 18 points and Scott hit 9 points
as 6 of the Birds hit the scoring column. With
the win, Southwestern improved to 12-0 on the
season.
Pleasant Plains and
West Central had an expected close ball game with
the Cardinals winning 42-41 on a yakel free throw
with 1.9 seconds on the clock. White had 14
and Schaad 10 to lead the Cougars. King scored
7 in the first half but was held to just 1 point in
the second half. West Central was 15-39 from
the field, 8-13 from the free throw line and had 15
turnovers in the loss. The Cardinals got 18
points from Owens and 10 from Yakel but, Jenkins was
not able to play due to an injury in the previous
game. Plains hit 48% from the field, 68% at
the charity stripe and had 16 turnovers as they
moved to the semi-final round of the championship
bracket.
It was a close game
for a while, before West Hancock broke it open to
win a 51-32 contest over Canton. The Lady
Giants turned the ball over 19 times as they hit
14-18 (77%) in free throws and only 23% from the
field. Moser scored 12 and Martin 8 to lead
Canton. Hall had 22 points and several good
passes to lead the Titans to the win. Bunn hit
double digits with 10 and 6 of the Titans scored in
the game. West Hancock shot 47 times in the
game and knocked down 19 (40%) of their shots while
hitting 10 of 14 free throws. Their bad number
was 20 turnovers in the win.
Lewistown looked
pretty good as they posted a 40-30 win over the
Macomb Bombers, which earned them the right to take
on Routt Catholic in the next round. Bainter
finished strongly in the game with 11 points as 7 of
the Indians scored in a well balanced offensive
attack. They were able to hit 14 of 42 shots
and 11 of 15 in free throws but they had a high (29)
number of turnovers. Macomb turned it over 23 times,
hit 40% in free throws and only 25% from the field
as they fell to 2-14. Claudon had 7 points to
lead the Bombers.
Liberty and
Griggsville-Perry played a very entertaining game as
the Eagles won it 41-40. Cramsey scored 14 and
Neisen 12 to lead the way while Flesner added 9 and
Harris 6. They were 50% from the line and 39%
(15-38) from the field. They did a nice job of
taking care of the ball and ended the game with only
13 turnovers. Whitaker had 13 and DeSpain 12 for the
Lady Tornadoes as Hobson added 8 and Bradshaw
7. They wre 5-11 (45%) from the line and 37%
(17-46) from the field as they fell to 8-7 on the
year. Griggsville-Perry also did a nice job of
taking care of the ball with just 14 turnovers in
the loss.
Mendon Unity was
too strong for Triopia and beat the Trojans 49-32
behind 16 points from Rush. Seven of the
Mustangs scoed in the game as they hit 42% from the
field. They did turn it over 18 times but hit
50% of their free throws on the way to their 5th win
of the season. Triopia-Meredosia only hit 36%
from the field and 38% from the free throw line
while they turned it over 22 times. Meyers and
Reither had 9 points each while Huey added 7 in the
loss. With the loss, Triopia will face
Rushville in their final game of the Lady Tiger
Tournament at 10:00
tomorrow.

Piasa the #2 seed led
in all 4 quarters to defeat the host school,
Beardstown Tigers 52-18 and will face Illini Bluffs
in the next round. They shot 38% from the
field and only turned the ball over 12 times, while
the Tigers shot 24% and turned it over 20
times. Riddle led Beardstown with 6 points
while Rawlins, Hoenes and Harris each scored
4. They were 5-14 from the free throw
line. Scott scored 15, while Bowman added 13
and Smith 11 as the Birds hit 5-9 from the free
throw line and connected on 7 treys.
Canton, the #3 seed
knocked off Griggsville-Perry 72-45 and will line up
against West Hancock at 2:30 on Monday.
Joachim put 16 in the books, as Moser added 13,
Wilson 12 and Martin 11 in a well rounded scoring
attack. The Little Giants shot 43% in the game
and had 17 turnovers. The tornadoes shot 22%
and turned it over 20 times in the loss.
Canton shot 14-21 from the free throw line and
Griggsville-Perry hit 5 of 15. Bradshaw led
the Tornadoes with 18 points and DeSpain hit 13 as
they were outscored in all 4 quarters.
Griggsville-Perry will take on Liberty Monday at
11:30.
In game #7, it was
the biggest upset of the day as Illini Bluffs
defeated #7 Pittsfield 57-39 as they put 4 players
in double figures. H. Wall scored 14,
McClintock 13, Russell 11 and Flynn 10. The
Tigers hit only 28% from the field but converted
17-28 from the free throw line. Willard
recorded 18 points, Newingham 8 and O'Brien 7 as
Pittsfield hit 8-11 from the free throw line. The
Saukees will face Beardstown at noon on Monday, in
the consolation bracket
West Hancock and
Liberty were tied at 2, after the first
quarter. Then the Titans opened it up to 14-6
at half time and out scored the Eagles 13-1 in the
3rd and put them away 41-17. Flesner was the high
scorer for Liberty with 9 points as they hit 3 of 7
from the free throw line and 6 for 28 in the game.
West Hancock was led by Yager with 14, then Bunn hit
for 11 and Hall 10 as they hit 3 of 6 from the free
throw line to help secure the win. Hall, who
was the MVP in last year's tournament stayed outside
most of the game and didn't use her inside game the
bulk of the time.
Beardstown got off
to an early 9-2 lead over Triopia-Meredosia and
never looked back as they posted the 45-28
win. Riddle had 5 treys for 15 points as
Hoenes scored 10, Rawlins 9 and Harris 7.
Reither scored 14 points with 2 treys and 2-2 free
throw shooting and no one else had more than 4
points in the loss. 2 for 6 free throw shooting
wasn't helpful and Triopia will take on Mendon Unity
at 10:00 Monday in the High School Gym.
In the opening game
of the 28th annual Beardstown Lady Tiger Classic,
Griggsville-Perry beat Mendon Unity 53-42, behind
Whitaker and Bradshaw who each scored 12 points.
Moore added9 while Despain scored 8 and Hobson 6. 18
of 25 free throws helped the Tornadoes and they
forced the Mustangs into 33 turnovers in the game.
Mendon got 12 points from Begeman and 10 from Moore
as they hit 8 for 20 in free throws. The Mustangs
will take on Triopia-Meredosia Monday and that may
prove to be a pretty good match up.

Rushville-Industry
boy's basketball team played a good game tonight
but, they came up a little short as they lost 53-42
to the Wildcats of North Fulton. In spite of
the 11 point loss, this was a much closer game until
the last 3 minutes of the game. With the loss, the
Rockets fell to 0-8 on the year but their effort and
basic play was respectable. Briney played well
with 15 points before he fouled out. Woodside
hit for 11 points and Harris knocked down 10 in the
loss. The Rockets shot 9 for 20 from the free
throw line and 15 for 48 from the field. They
took care of the ball in the first half and only
turned it over 7 times and then had 11 more
turnovers in the second half. Shaw led the
Wildcats with 16 points including 4 treys.
Melvin scocred 15 as he hit 8-8 from the free throw
line at crunch time. Quick scored 9 and
Norville 8 while Davis scored 4 as North Fulton
spread the ball around well. They shot 23 treys in
the game and hit 8 of them. They were 13-17 in
free throws and 17-50 from the field. The only
down side of their win was 21 turnovers in the game.
The Wildcats improved to 4-3 with the win.
Brown County won the 1st annual Spartan Tournament
as they defeated the host WHNG Spartans
53-50.

According to several
coaches I spoke with, Brown County could be one of
the front runners in the WIVC conference this season
in boy's basketball. After watching them last
night, against the Bunker Hill Minutemen, I could
see how that might happen. They are athletic, fast
and good leapers. Wilson scored 15 ponts to
lead the way, while Henricks added 14. Chaney also
hit double figures (11)) and DeWitt poured in
7. Goudschaal scored 6 and Dormire 2 and the
hustling team defense was pretty good. The Hornets
only turned the ball over 9 times and if there was a
weak spot, it came from the free throw line where
they shot (14-27) 51%. Bunker Hill did what the
Minutemen do too many times, in my opinion, and had
a lapse in the game where they were stuck on 27
points for an extended period of time. They
fell behind and never recovered as they seem to have
a difficult time of playing 4 quarters of ball. Mook
hit 11, Burnet 10, Mansholt 9, Anthony Williams 8,
Allen 6 so they spread the ball around, but when it
comes to crunch time they seem to want to play some
one of one ball and it lets them down. They
turned the ball over 19 times. The good news
was a 5-6 (83%) effort from the free throw
line. Brown County is 1-0 on the year and
Bunker Hill fell to 0-2.
The Minutemaids of
Bunker Hill are tall and athletic and are going to
cause some problems for most teams they play this
year. They won an easy 46-18 game last night at Mt.
Sterling as they improved to 3-0 on the year.
The Hornets have some difficult times scoring, at
times, and last night was no exception. They tried
to get inside and were rejected on numerous
occasions, and just didn't hit the outside shots to
loosen it up a little. Kerley played well with 9
points and Koch added 4 with a trey and a free
throw. Gragg (2), Kunkel (2) and Babb (1) rounded
out the scoring. It didn't help matters when Brown
County was only able to hit 3 of 12 free throws and
turned the ball over 30 times. This is a young team
that shows good potential, but they will have a hard
time competing with the upper echelon of the WIVC.
The Minutemaids are a physical team and may hurt
themselves with fouls in big games. They
committed 20 fouls last night and had to set some of
they key players down early in the game. Brooklyn
Hlafka led the scoring with 12 and Amy Golike scored
11 while playing a solid game at both ends of the
floor. Lovejoy hit for 9 points and Paul
knocked down 6. Paul got in some early foul
trouble, as did Hlafka and that slowed down the
interior pressure for a time. Ivester and
Johnson added 3 each and Michaela Hlafka rounded out
the scoring with 2. Free throw shooting was
pretty good with a 10-15 effort (66%) and as big as
Bunker Hill players are, they only gave up the ball
11 times. This is a good team with a real up-side
and it will be interesting to see how the better
teams play them.

West Central was
dominant in their win over New Berlin tonight as
they won a one-sided 59-34 game. With the win,
they will be in the title game tomorrow night when
they face Williamsville at 7:30 pm. Epley led
the Pretzels with 12 points but Pelletier was held
to just 5 points. 21 turnovers in the game is
not a good number and 6-9 free throw shooting helped
a little. This was a mis-match from the beginning as
the Cougar defense forced the early turnovers and
West Central also owned the paint for most of the
game on the offensive and defensive end of the
floor. Jacob Peak was rock-solid tonight with 18
points and 2-2 free throw shooting. Josh Peak
scored 9 as Jeffeson, DeJaynes and Buhlig each added
6. Crocket, Roberts and Barnett scored 4 and
Gutherie rounded out the game with 2 points.
The Cougars shot 68% (17-25) from the charity
stripe and had 16 turnovers in the win. They
are 3-0 on the year and off to a good start
In game one this
evening from the Turkey Tournament in New Berlin,
the 2-0 Williamsville Bullets and 2-0 Girard Big Red
met to see who would play in the championship game
on Saturday night. It turned out to be a good game
that the Bullets won 56-46. They were up by 19
points at one time but the Big Red kept fighting
back and got as close as 4 points in the 2nd
half. Hays had 13 points to lead Girard as 6
players got into the scoring column. Sutton
had early foul trouble as did Burton and they both
fouled out in the 2nd half. Sutton scored 6
and Burton, who is averaging 24.5 points a game only
scored 8. Buck scored in each quarter and finished
with 9. Leonard and Emory each scored 5.
The Big red were 9-18 from the free throw line and
gave up the ball 19 times. The Bullets only
had 5 players score in the game and will need to
spread it around a little more in their title game
with West Central on Saturday. Gentile hit for 18
and Wagner 17 to lead the way. Schultz added 8 while
Combs scored 7 and Roscetti 6. They were 7-16
for 44% free throw shooting and they had 16
turnovers. While they may beat West Central, I
am curious as to whether or not they have the depth
to go 4 quarters against the relentless pressure and
board work the Cougars will bring to the game.
It should be a nice match up for these 3-0
squads.

Routt played a solid
football game today and was defeated by Tuscola, at
the home of the Warriors, 21-7. Tuscola scored
on their first possession and then it was a real
defensive battle until late in the game. The
Warriors scored two more times to make it 21-0 and
it looked like they were going to get their 7th shut
out at home. Schmidt hit Tonry for a 54 yard
touchdown to get the Rockets on the scoreboard and
finish the game in style. Tonry had 12 carries
for 25 yards, Heineman 6 for 26 and Schmidt 4 for
26. Duke added 2 carries for 3 total yards.
Schmidt threw for 79 yards, 2 interceptions and 1
touchdown. Routt only had 2 penalties in the
game for 15 yards. Shelmadine rushed for 39
yards, Scribner 13, Edwards 10, Brookins 21 and
Meyer 77. Edwards caught 2 passed for 29 yards,
Yoakum 3 for 26 and Shelmadine 7 for 83 yards.
Tuscola improved to 10-3 and will play Lexington for
the state title on Friday. Shelmadine scored
twice on 2 yard runs and Meyer had a 2 yard
score as well. Routt finished the year strong as
they posted a 9-4 record and represented the WIVC
well right down to the end.

Rushville got off to a
solid start tonight and were tied 17-17 at half
time, then the game slipped away and they lost to
Rockridge 55-31. Way to many turnovers was the
main factor tonight as the Rockets turned it over 20
times in the first half and 17 more times in the
second half. That is just too many extra
opportunities to give a good opponent and hope to
hang around. Simpson had a good night with 15 points
and 8 for 10 from the free throw line. Rhodes
scored 7, Thomas 4, Moore 2, Wise 2 and Farris 1 in
the loss. Rushville-Industry shot 12-22 from the
free throw line for 54.5% and fell to 0-3 with the
loss. The Rocks improved to 2-1 on the year as Fuhr
led all scorers with 16 points as she hit 8 of 10
free throws. Moseley hit double figures with 11 and
Widdop added 8 points while Watkins tossed in 7.
Macke and Dowell scored 4 while Dixon netted 3 and
Wolfe 2 to round out the scoring. Only 14 turnovers
helped and Rockridge hit 16 of 30 from the charity
stripe (53%) to help secure the win. The
Rockets will face Havana and Pleasant Plains on
Saturday to finish their play at the Macomb
tournament. They will also be home next
Tuesday when they host Brown County.

It was day two of the
Macomb girl's basketball tournament and the Lady
Rockets of Rushville faced their 2nd tall opponent
in a row. They had been beaten 41-26 by Macomb
on Monday, when they tired late in the game.
This evening it was even taller Knoxville team, with
6' 3" Hannah Weedman leading the way. The first
quarter score was 20-3 and Chelsea Rhodes had 3
fouls before half time. After trailing 36-6 at
halftime Rushville-Industry ended up losing 61-23
and fell to 0-2 on the early season. This is a tough
tournament with strong teams and it is conceivable
that the Rockets could come home with no wins.
If so, it has still been a good tournament as they
are facing some better schools that they will face
during the regular season. Brandy Wise looked pretty
good tonight with 7 points and 3 of 5 at the free
throw line. She also did a nice job inside the paint
and on on the rebounds. Ealy had a trey and 6 points
overall. No one else had more than 2 on the
evening. Weedman had 15 points to lead the
Blue Bullets. Frank added 11 points with 3
3-pointers. Ball and Tessa Jones added 7 each as 11
of the Bullets put points on the board in the game.
Rushville-Industry had 19 turnovers and forced 12.
R-I will take on the Rockridge Rockets on Friday and
play two more games on Saturday.

Bement (South Piatt)
came to Mt. Sterling with hopes of upsetting the
Brown County Hornet football team and left
after being defeated 34-0. The Hornet defense
continued it's dominance and will now take on a good
Tuscola team, at home, next week. Steve Bryan rushed
for over 100 yards (118) and had a good day but, as
a team, the Wildcats only managed 81 rushing yards
and 88 through the air. Colin Auth was the main
receiver with 77 of those 88 yards. Bement was
penalized 18 times in the game for 125 yards
and the Hornets had 5 penalties for 45 yards.
Ace Henricks threw for 63 yards and the Hornets
rushed for 271 yards as they dominated the score and
the time of possession. Kunkel had a 55 yard
touchdown run and 93 yards total. Cross had his
typical good game with 79 yards and Phelps rushed
for 51 as Brown County was able to spread the ball
around. Dormire had 31 yards in receptions and
Wilson 26 to go with 13 yards rushing.
Jacob Ward set the game out and will be ready for
the next round. The Warriors run a spread
offense and it should be a good challenge for the
Hornets pass defense as they try to take step #2
toward the state title. We will carry the game
for you next week but encourage you to get to the
game and watch the Hornets in action.

The Brown County
volleyball regional opening match had Mendon Unity
defeat Meredosia-Chambersburg 25-8, 25-13.
Liberty beat Triopia 25-22, 25-13 and the Trojans
ended their season 10-16. Clayton had 6 kills and 4
blocks as Reither played a good match with 1 kill, 6
points and 10 assists. Joehl and Rachel Carls had 2
kills each while Meghan Carls added 1 kill, 2 points
and 1 block. Triopia committed 5 service errors with
2 of them being foot faults. They also had 3 aces on
the evening. With the win, the Eagles improved to
17-16. Vollbracht had 17 assists, 2 points and
1 kill as she played a solid match. Neisen had
6 kills and 1 point, while Larson had 2 kills, 4
points and 1 assist. Sanders also have several digs
and 1 point. Cramsey added 5 kills as Field had 2
points and Wagner provided the power with 7 kills, 3
points and 1 block. In the final match of the
night, Mendon Unity defeated Liberty and will play
Payson on Saturday at 5:00 for the title and the
right to play in the Camp Point Sectional.
At A-C, Athens
defeated Springfield Calvary 25-5, 25,8 while
Edinburg dropped New Berlin 25-16, 25-19. Then
Athens beat Edinburg and will play A-C
Central/Virginia for the regional title at 5:00
Saturday. Routt and West Central will play for
the Griggsville-Perry championship at 11:00 on
Saturday. The Cougars defeated Pleasant Hill
25-15, 25-11, then defeated the host Tornadoes
22-25, 31-29, 25-12. It will be the third time
this season the Cougars and Rockets play, so it
should be an interesting match up. We will
carry the Griggsville-Perry and A-C Central regional
championships live on 101.3 WVIL, then move on to
the Camp Point Central Sectional with the regional
champs.

Class 1A volleyball
regional action started tonight and CPC eliminated
the Brown County Lady Hornets at Mt. Sterling 25-22,
25-9. Barry Western upset Franklin-Waverly
22-25, 25-19, 33-31, then lost to Routt 25-14,
25-10. At A-C Central/Virginia, the Pawnee
Indians beat South Fork 25-15, 25-14 to earn the
right to play the host school in the semi-final
round. Then the Knights took care of business
25-9, 25-10 as they clearly took charge early and
finished strongly. Crain had a pretty good
night for the Indians with 4 kills, 1 point and 1
block. Lakin Puzey also played well with 4
kills and 3 blocks. Pugh added 4 assists as well and
Pawnee only had 1 service error. They had
played an earlier game and just didn't look strong
against the dominating home team. Cave sered 8
points with 2 aces, Stock had 2 kills and a block,
while Bergerud counted 7 kills and 2 points. Jokisch
also had 7 kills and a point to go with 1 block.
Williams had a good service night with 6 aces, 4
kills, and 18 points. Stribling had 3 kills, 2
points and 17 assists. This was an all around
good team game for the Knights and puts them into
the title game at 5:00 on Saturday night.

The Brown County
Hornets did what they started to do at the beginning
of the football season. They won 9 games and
lost none. They led the state in defense (in
all classes) and was 2nd in the state in offensive
scoring. They pretty much dominated tonight's
game with Greenfield-Northwestern and won
34-0. The Tigers got inside the 10 yard line
twice but just couldn't close the deal and cross the
goal line. Greenfield had 165 yards passing but,
only 43 yards on the ground. Cross, Henricks, Wilson
and Reich led the Hornet ground game as they scored
early and wrapped the game up with their defense.
They will be home for the first game of the play
offs and unless there is an upset somewhere along
the line, will play a lot of games at home if they
can stay alive. This is a solid football team
and you would expect them to do well. Playing in the
WIVC, in my opinion, is an added plus as the
conference sent 6 teams to the post season activity
once again. We will carry the Hornet games and want
to wish them the best of luck as they move
forward. It is a senior laden team with a good
work ethic and enough talent to make a solid run, so
we will ride with them to the end. It all
starts next week end.

You knew that Pleasant
Hill was going to be a tough game for the Routt
Rockets tonight and it turned out to just
that. The Wolves won a defensive battle 14-13
to improve to 6-2 on the year and the loss set the
Rockets back a little as they fell to 5-3 and will
hope to beat WHNG next Friday night. Pleasant
Hill struck first on a 59 yard touchdown from
McKinnon to Borrowman, then they failed to get the
extra point. Routt came back with a Tonry
touchdown and Eilering kicked the point to make it
7-6. Then the Wolves struck again with a
Keaton Baker touchdown and the 2 point conversion
from McKinnon to Borrowman gave them the 14-7 lead
at half time. Routt scored in the third and
the extra point was blocked, then it turned to
defense again and P. Hill hung on for the
victory. As the regular season comes to an
end, it seems like the defense minded teams are
taking charge and picking off the close wins.
The Wolves pass defense really put Heineman and
Schmidt in a tough position tonight and just didn't
allow many open chances. Duke led the way in
receptions but had to make a diving catch and a
great jump and snatch catch over Avery Gregurich for
a big gainer. It was a hard night to move the
ball for both teams and a fun game to watch. The
Wolves will finish with Virginia so they could go
7-2 and put themselves in great shape in the play
off picture. Brandon Johnson hopes to be back in the
Routt lineup next week and that will be helpful
also.

Volley for the Cure at
AC Central High School was a big success in
attendance, participation and then with a good
volleyball between the Knights and Cougars of West
Central. The Knights improved to 21-6 on the
year and the Cougars fell to 14-12 in this WIVC
match up. White had 8 service points 7 kills
and 8 blocks to lead West Central. Todd had 11
digs in the match and a number of Cougars
contributed but their consistency or
inconsistency in the match led to their down
fall. They gave up strings of points to the
Knights and had a hard time making a strong run
themselves. Bergerud had her usual strong match with
11 kills and 2 blocks. Stribling added 20 more
assists and Cave served well with 13 points.
Jokisch started slowly but came on with 5 points and
6 kills in the win. Allan had 3 points, 4
kills and 3 digs also, so it was a well rounded
match for the Knights. They have a huge conference
game on Tuesday as they make a road trip to the 20-2
Rockets of Routt. Routt will play in the
Waverly tournament over the week end and may play as
many as 5 games, then have a big road game against
Hartsburg-Emden on Monday, so they will either be
well prepared or tired come Tuesday evening.
The adrenalin will start flowing early for this
great volleyball rivalry, so be sure you don't miss
it. We will carry it live on 101.3 WVIL.

In a dominating
performance, the Brown County Hornets handed Routt
Catholic a 44-0 loss, their first of the
season. It was the Hornet line taking care of
business from their first possession to their last
as the Rockets had a difficult time moving the ball
offensively and couldn't stop the Hornet running
game as Ward and Wilson finished with 100 yards
each. 256 rushing yards and 39 yards through
the air plus 5 touchdowns and 1 field goal was more
than enough. The Brown County defense only
allowed 56 yards on the ground and 30 yards passing
in this impressive win. Hieneman led the Rockets
with 52 yards and Tonry 32. Routt had 10
penalties for 70 yards and the Hornets 4 for
60. Henricks did a nice job of handling the
offense and added a 34 yard field goal to top it
off. Brown County will face West Central next
Friday night in a road game. Rushville lost
their game tonight 57-0 to Illini West and will be
home to face Beardstown next week.

Payson is a good team,
fundamentally strong, well coached and hard to
beat. They showed it again tonight as they
defeated an improving Brown County team 25-22,
25-16. The Indians made a few mistakes in the
match but, their over all team play and consistency
put them on top at the end. They had 8 service
errors and had 7 aces to even it out. The
height and strength of Harris along with the solid
sets of Erin Smith made a nice combination for
aggressive volleyball. Harris had 3 points, 5
kills and 5 blocks and Smith served 5 points and had
12 assists. Alyssa Smith had 9 points while Flesner
had a point, 1 assist and 5 kills. Richards is
another tall player who contributed 2 points, 5
kills and an assist and the Indians got good play
from Speckhart who finished with 4 points and 5
kills. Payson can attack from several angles
and are hard to defend. Buss had a point and 8
assists and played a steady, hustling match.

matches with 3 points 1 kill and 2 blocks.

little too tough tonight for the Hornets but this

make some noise in the WIVC.
In the opener,
Rushville-Industry just looked like they were about
a step slow against the hustling Mustangs of
Unity. The final score was 25-16 and
25-15. Donley had 13 assists with 3 points, a
kill and 3 blocks as she was very active tonight for
Unity. Moore had 10 kills and 4 blocks and brown

points, 3 kills, 5 blocks and an assist.

them as the season goes on. The Rockets only
had 4 service errors this evening but, they also
only had 1 ace as Unity did a nice job of returning
serve. Rushville will try to pick up their first win
of the season when they face Western tomorrow at

The Rushville-Industry
Rockets lost their season opener 40-0 to Havana on
the road. There are a couple of ways of
looking at the game. First you could say that
Rushville is not a very good team, or secondly and
closer to the truth is they opened against a veteran
ball club who played very well and got a couple of
break along the way. Rushville-Industry is
young and you could see it in their performance
against the Ducks. They didn't cover a punt
well and Braden hurt them with a big return that set
up their first score. Then a low snap and
Lamaster put his knee on the ground while fielding
it. That gave the Ducks good field position
and they scored again. Davenport ended up with minus
8 yard rushing but, he had a 6 yard touchdown run
and threw to 5 different receivers for 66 yards and
a TD. Bridges had 21 yards and 2 scores and
Holliday finished with 147 yards and a 95 yard
touchdown run on a 3 and 40 play. The Ducks
made big plays when they had to and were the better
team on the field tonight. It was a nice overall
performance for Havana as they held the Rockets in
check for most of the game while committing only 5
penalties for 20 yards. Rushville-Industry had
38 carries for 119 yards and were led by Benninghoff
who carried the ball 17 times for 90 yards. He
played well on defense also. Woodside had a hard
time finding enough time to throw the ball and
finished with a 1-3 night for minus 3 yards.
The Rockets were penalized 5 times for 25 yards and
were hurt the most by their special team defense.
Onion ran for 22 yards and Carson 6 in the
loss. It was a tough night on the football
field for the Rockets and they will need to re-group
and get ready for Camp Point Central next Friday.

The final day of the
harness racing at the Brown County Fair was
everything Fair officials had hoped for. There
were 10 races and the finale was tremendously
exciting. In the open race, Richie Bibbs won the
Maiden-colt & gelding pace in 2:03.2. The
2nd race was a maiden-colt & gelding pace, won
by Zone Player in 2:05.3 (photo finish) and driven
by Tom Simmons. In the 3rd, Brandon Simpson drove
Pinfoot to the win 2:00.2. Simpson won back to

bike won the 5th race, another open pace, in
1:56.2. Ms Tegan (Sam Widger) won the 2 year
old filly trot in the 6th at 2:09 flat. It was
Widger's 7th win of the fair and he would come back
to win the 8th, behind Big Dollar, in the 3 year old
Filly pace. The 1:57.3 time was the new track
record. In the 7th race, Run and Tell Pap won the 2
year old colt trot easily with Michael Cox on the
reins at 2:05 flat. A local horse out of the
Dave Clinard Stables won the 9th race as Tom Simmons
drove Daretodogreatthings posted a time of 1:58. The
$25,000 "Taser Gun" for 4 year old and up
pace was worth waiting for. I Can Only
Imagine, driven by Brandon Simpson in a new track
record 1:51.1 in an excellent race. Audience of One
and BC's Jesse finished 2nd and 3rd
respectively. All in all it was a solid field
for 2 days with good crowds and quality
drivers.

The Harness races at
the Brown County Fair were a big hit last night as
there were 3 new records set on this well kept, fast
track. Race #1 was won by Little Lizzie B, #2
belonged to Pea Ridge, race #3 went to Elloluv, #4
was won by Bottoms Up, as the 5th race ended up with
Principal Marvin out in front, #6 had Speed in the
Tunnel setting a record 1:58.3 as #7 had the new
record tied by Battleshoe Victor (both horses drive
by Sam Widger), the 8th race stayed local with Nick
Prather driving Andi's Sister and the final race of
the night was won by Picnic Place at 1:59.3, after
an early break by the favorite. There will be
more of the same this evening with some very fast
horses, 3 Chicago drivers and a track that is in
great shape. The $25,000 purse will go the
winner of race #10, so there is already excitement
in the air.
